Megemlékezés - Condolence message
Az Iranisztikai Intézet mély megrendüléssel tudatja, hogy Clifford Edmund Bosworth, emeritus professor of Arabic Studies, Department of Middle Eastern Studies, University of Manchester, a Magyar Tudományos Akadémia tiszteleti tagja 2004-ban történt megválasztása óta, 2015. február 28-án elhunyt. Bosworth professzor úr a tanszék megalakulása óta állandó tanácsadója, segítője és tanára volt a tanszék munkatársainak, hallgatóinak. Megrendülten emlékezünk most első és utolsó budapesti jelenlétére. Az iranisztika első, külföldiek részvételével 1998 szeptemberében szervezett konferenciájának kötetét (Irano-Turkic Cultural Contacts in the 11th-17th centuries, ed. Éva M. Jeremiás, The Avicenna Institute of Middle Eastern Studies, Piliscsaba 2003) az ő 70. születésnapjára ajánlottuk. Az utolsó konferenciánkon, melyet At the Gate of Modernism címmel 2010 októberében rendeztünk (ld. kiadását 2012, Avicenna KKKI) szintén ő tartotta a nyitó előadást. Ez alkalommal, majd még egyszer 2013 májusában is találkozott diákjainkkal a Tanszéken, és kommentálta az MA és PhD hallgatók témaválasztását. Gazdag munkásságából, mely felöleli az arab és perzsa nyelvű középkori történeti források nagy részének elemzését és kommentáros fordítását, hálával emeljük ki azt a fejezetet, melyet ‒ a kötet egyedüli külföldi szerzőjeként ‒ a perzsa középkori történeti források összefoglalásáról az Iráni föld – perzsa kultúra (szerk. Jeremiás Éva M. Avicenna KKKI, 2007) című, a BA hallgatók számára összeállított kötet számára írt. Halála az iranisztika magyar és nemzetközi közössége számára pótolhatatlan veszteség.
Condolence message
The Department of Iranian Studies announces with regret and sorrow the passing away of Clifford Edmund Bosworth, Emeritus Professor of Arabic Studies at the Department of Middle Eastern Studies, University of Manchester, and Honorary Member (since 2004) of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, on 28 February, 2015. Professor Bosworth was a dedicated mentor and partner of the Department since its establishment, and a frequent lecturer there, assisting its faculty members and students with equal sympathy. We recall with grief his first and last visit to our Department. The proceedings of the first international conference of Iranian Studies in Budapest (Irano-Turkic Cultural Contacts in the 11th-17th centuries, ed. Éva M. Jeremiás, The Avicenna Institute of Middle Eastern Studies, Piliscsaba, 2003) was dedicated to his seventieth birthday. He also delivered the keynote lecture at the last of our conferences which he attended, entitled At the Gate of Modernism (October, 2010, proceedings published in 2012 by the Avicenna Institute). During these visits, lastly in 2013, he met our students and gave valuable comments on their MA and PhD subjects. Of his rich oeuvre which encompasses the analysis and translation of Mediaeval Arabic and Persian historiography in its entirety, we gratefully single out the chapter on Mediaeval Persian sources which he wrote – as the only foreign contributor – to our textbook for BA students, entitled Iráni föld – perzsa kultúra (Iranian Land – Persian Culture, Avicenna Institute, 2007). His death is an immense loss for the Hungarian and international community of Iranian Studies.
